On 13th November 1872, fifty year old Hancock, a butcher, returned home from a neighbouring village the worse for drink and quarrelled with his wife, of whom he was very jealous. Tired of their constant rows, she told him she was leaving and walked out. Hancock followed but failed to persuade her to return, whereupon he stabbed her with a knife. He was sentenced to death at Warwick Assizes on 18th December, he was hanged by George Smith in Warwick on the 7th January 1873.
